Job description

ESG Responsibilities:

• Develop policy and strategy relating to OPTrust’s approach to ESG integration

• Manage OPTrust’s Responsible Investing (RI) program, incorporating investment governance and proxy voting, work through coalitions and industry initiatives, engagement of investment managers and communications with internal investment staff

• Build and manage a small team of ESG investment professionals

• Show leadership and champion RI internally and externally to engage with portfolio managers across asset classes

• Produce professional caliber reports for internal analysis and presentations to staff, the Proxy Voting Sub-Committee, the Investment Committee and the Board of Trustees

Proxy Voting and Governance

• Direct the production of reports related to the Trust’s proxy voting record

• Oversee the performance of internal proxy activities

• Research and provide input and recommendations to senior management on improving, updating and revising the Fund’s proxy voting guidelines to incorporate ‘best practices’

Requirements / qualifications

CANDIDATE PROFILE

• 2-5 years experience in Responsible Investing, with seven to ten years experience in financial services

• Strong knowledge of the pension, investment and consulting industry

• Qualitative and quantitative analytical skills (including strong technical competencies)

• Highly developed writing and communication skills; ability to present ESG relevance to investment concepts and to audiences with limited knowledge of RI

• Undergraduate Degree required

• Advanced degree in a relevant discipline or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder is preferred

OPTrust is seeking a Manager to direct proxy voting activities and facilitate the integration of environmental, social and corporate governance factors (ESG) within our investment decision-making and ownership practices, in order to support our managers in making better investment decisions within a fiduciary framework. You will work with OPTrust staff, external investment managers and advisors to develop and implement a strategy for OPTrust’s approach to ESG integration. This position provides leadership in the development and implementation of OPTrust’s ESG initiatives and proxy voting activities; including responsibility for OPTrust proxy voting guidelines and for supporting and researching ESG and corporate governance initiatives of the Board.
