EIB Standards on Climate Action: Update on Climate Finance Tracking and Carbon Footprinting

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has developed robust standards for climate action in its investments.  However, the Bank’s climate standards are not set in stone – the Bank is committed to review and where necessary, improve the methodology’s quality and coverage. This seminar will provide an update with regard to two key areas: climate finance tracking and carbon footprinting.

There have increasingly been questions on what gets counted as climate finance. The EIB has been working closely with other multilateral development banks (MDBs) and developed a transparent methodology. Over the last year, the Bank and other MDBs have aligned their principles for tracking climate mitigation finance with the International Development Finance Club (IDFC) and have started a process for harmonizing approaches for adaptation finance. Any developments in tracking climate finance for the future must be seen now in the context of the global climate change agreement adopted in Paris last year.

The EIB’s carbon footprint methodologies for its investments have also been subject to systematic review and adjustments. The EIB applies its carbon footprinting methodology to all sectors, accounting for about 95% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from EIB’s investment projects.  Importantly, the Bank has also played a leading role in harmonisation and standard-setting within the International Financial Institutions (IFI) community, which is actively exploring how to extend the harmonised methodologies in order to further support the Paris Agreement.

This seminar is an opportunity to learn and discuss about the Bank’s climate finance tracking and GHG methodologies. It will also provide a platform to exchange expertise and views on the associated challenges and the value of these standards for transitioning to low-carbon and climate-resilient economy.
