The Global Sustainable Investment Review 2024 (GSIR), published during COP30, tracks the evolution of responsible and sustainable investment across the world’s major financial markets.
Despite economic and geopolitical challenges, sustainable investment has moved from a niche practice to a systemic consideration, though progress remains insufficient to meet global climate and sustainability goals.
Economic Context
Since the last report published by the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance (GSIA), inflation has surged due to supply-chain bottlenecks, labour market frictions, and energy price volatility amplified by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Despite the challenging political and economic conditions over the last two years, there are signs that a sustainable economic transition is underway: energy investment in the clean energy sector reached 64% in 2024, and the green economy now represents USD 7.9 trillion, the second-fastest growing sector globally after Technology.
Sustainable Finance Disclosure and Market Trends
The 2024 GSIR reports that positive developments to enhance sustainability disclosures that began in the EU have now spread across many GSIA regions, enhancing transparency and consistency in sustainable investment reporting. Yet, large institutional mandates, sovereign portfolios, and private-market assets, accounting for 40-50% of global assets, remain largely outside disclosure frameworks.
Challenges Ahead and Policy Recommendations
While investors have a crucial role to play in addressing climate change, they cannot solve the crisis alone. A successful transition to net zero requires coordinated action between governments, investors and corporations, supported by public policies that strengthen the conditions for sustainable finance to continue to deliver the capital needed for a sustainable future.
